The best time to buy travel insurance is usually within 2 weeks of making your very first payment towards the trip. Many policies offer additional benefits when the policy is purchased during this advantage period. The additional benefits usually cover financial default of a travel supplier and offer a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver. Some optional coverages like “cancel for any reason” require that the policy be purchased within the advantage period. For basic or economy plans, there usually is no advantage period. However, benefits are typically paid for unforeseen events. This being said, the earlier you purchase, the better. Once something happens that may cancel or interrupt your trip, it is too late for insurance.
