Will Travel Insurance Cover the Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico?

Last Updated:

The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has many travelers concerned about their upcoming trip.  Travel insurance does not provide coverage specifically for man made disasters.  Some plans with travel delay coverage will reimburse the costs of lodging, meals and local transportation if there is a common carrier delay, even if it is because of the oil spill.  Normally, the delay must be for a specific amount of time, anywhere from 3 to 24 hours.  Cancel for any reason coverage will pay the traveler a portion of the trip cost and does not require that a reason be provided.  This benefit is typically a selectable option and only available for 9 to 30 days from the initial trip deposit date, depending on the plan.  Always refer to the certificate of insurance for details.
