St. Maarten Travel Insurance Requirements

The island of St. Maarten has remained open for U.S. travelers throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, without a quarantine requirement. However, all travelers visiting the country must meet a couple requirements in order to gain entry.

First, travelers must purchase the St. Maarten SXM Protection plan, which providers health coverage for visitors. This includes coverage for hospitals and doctors fees, or evacuations, and also has coverage for Covid-19-related emergencies. This policy costs $30 for travelers 15 years old or older, and $10 for travelers under 15.

In addition to this policy, all travelers must provide proof of a negative Covid test that was taken within 5 days of their arrival. If they do not have this, they can provide a rapid test result within 2 days of their departure.

Squaremouth’s Travel Insurance Recommendations

While St. Maarten has a specific policy that travelers must buy, the amount of coverage may be an important factor. Squaremouth recommends at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage for international travelers. Squaremouth also recommends travelers search for a travel insurance policy with at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage. Medical Evacuation can cover the cost of an evacuation to the nearest hospital in the event of an emergency.

In addition to these required benefits, Squaremouth recommends a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes other benefits for the most common travel insurance concerns. Primarily, this includes Trip Cancellation coverage and Medical Evacuation coverage.

Many travelers visiting St. Maarten have high trip costs and want to protect themselves in the event they cant travel. For these travelers, we recommend a comprehensive policy with Trip Cancellation. The Trip Cancellation benefit can reimburse 100% of a traveler’s prepaid and non-refundable trip costs, such as airfare, hotels, and cruises, if they need to cancel for a covered reason. This can include not being able to travel because they are sick with Covid-19 or another illness.
