Can I cancel my trip because of a terror threat?

Last Updated:

Standard travel insurance policies do not provide coverage to cancel due to the threat of terrorism.

To be covered cancel under the Terrorism benefit, an incident must occur in or near a city listed on your itinerary within 7-30 days of your departure date. The event must be declared an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State.

A traveler can cancel due to a terror threat if their policy includes the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade, which allows a traveler to cancel for any reason not listed under a standard policy.

In order to be eligible for Cancel For Any Reason, you must insure 100% of your total trip cost and cancel at least 2-3 days prior to your scheduled departure date. This upgrade requires that you purchase the policy at least 14-30 days of your initial trip booking and will reimburse you up to 75% of that cost.
