Covid-19

Can I be covered if my destination closes its borders because of coronavirus?

Last Updated:

Short Answer

If your destination closes its borders due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and you cannot enter the country, most standard travel insurance policies will not provide Trip Cancellation coverage. If this is one of your main concerns, Cancel For Any Reason is the only benefit that can apply to this situation.

More Detail

Cancel For Any Reason is an optional upgrade that can partially reimburse you to cancel your trip for a reason that is not otherwise covered, such as a government-mandated border closure at your destination. This benefit is time-sensitive, and can only be purchased within 14-21 days of the first payment towards your trip.

In order to be eligible for the Cancel For Any Reason benefit, you must insure your entire trip cost. In order to cancel under this benefit, you must cancel your trip in its entirety at least 2 days before your scheduled departure date. This benefit can reimburse up to 75% of your trip cost, and typically increases a policy’s premium by about 40-50%.

Although a border closure likely is not covered by travel insurance, a government-required quarantine when you reach your destination can be. Certain providers may offer Trip Cancellation covered if your destination requires a quarantine upon arrival, as many countries are enforcing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In order for this coverage to apply, the quarantine must last for more than half of your trip, and you must cancel prior to departure.
