The huge swell in visitor numbers to London during Olympics season will present a much increased risk of inconvenience for travellers, according to US-based comparison website Squaremouth, and travel insurance should be considered a necessity. The number of people passing through Heathrow Airport is expected to increase by up to 30 per cent, from 180,000 passengers per day to as many as 233,000, an increase that ‘can cause major issues for air travellers,’ according to Squaremouth marketing manager Anna Coats. “Airline passengers may have travel delays, missed connections or lost baggage occurrences,” she continued.
Heathrow is expecting to handle over 200,000 individual pieces of luggage on its busiest days, and Squaremouth warns travellers that this will significantly add to the risk of baggage-related mishaps. “When attending something as substantial as the Olympics, travellers should protect their investment,” said Chris Harvey, chief executive of Squaremouth. “Spending a few dollars now can save thousands if something were to go wrong.”
