Travel Insurance FAQ

What is "layoff" insurance?

Last Updated:

Layoff insurance is included in many travel insurance polices.  It protects you from financial loss for a cancelled vacation as a result of an unforeseen layoff or termination of employment if you have been been employed with the same employer for 1 – 5 consecutive years, depending on the policy.  Many insurance carriers have recently added or improved this benefit due to the uncertainty in today’s economy.  If you resign, are fired with cause or accept a buy out with benefits, you are probably not covered. Review the policy certificate for any conditions or exclusions that apply. If you are looking for cover for any eventuality, look for a policy that provides a “cancel for any reason” benefit.  However, expect to pay about 50% more for this benefit which typically refunds less than 100% of your trip cost.
