What is life insurance – accidental death coverage?
Short Answer
Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage (AD&D), provides a payout in the event of an accidental death or dismemberment on your covered trip.
More Detail
24 Hour AD&D provides a payout in the event of accidental loss of life or limb that occurs anytime throughout the length of your trip. This benefit typically provides the smallest payout compared to other forms of AD&D in a travel insurance policy. Other types of AD&D limit coverage to specific portions of a trip, either while on an airplane or on a common carrier.
Flight Only AD&D provides a payout in the event of accidental loss of life or limb that occurs while you are in-flight on your trip. This benefit typically provides the highest payout compared to other forms of AD&D coverage within travel insurance. Flight Only AD&D coverage can typically be applied to travelers who are passengers of a licensed air conveyance. Piloting your own plane or acting as crew are generally excluded.
Common Carrier AD&D provides a payout in the event of accidental loss of life or limb that occurs while traveling on a common carrier, while on a covered trip. “Common Carrier” is typically defined as any public, ticketed transportation, such as a flight, bus or train. This coverage generally provides a higher payout than 24 AD&D coverage, and a lower payout than Flight Only AD&D coverage. Driving your own vehicle, piloting your own plane, or acting as crew are generally excluded.
