What travel insurance benefits can cover Covid-19 quarantine?

Last Updated:

If a traveler is ordered to quarantine with Covid-19, their policy’s Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Emergency Medical, and Travel Delay benefits can apply.

If you test positive for Covid-19 before your trip and must quarantine at home, Trip Cancellation can provide coverage for your prepaid and non-refundable trip costs. This benefit may also be applied if a family member contracts Covid-19 and requires care.

If you’ve already left for your trip and must quarantine due to a positive Covid-19 test, Trip Interruption coverage can reimburse you for missed portions of your trip. This benefit can cover 100% to 200% of your prepaid and non-refundable trip costs, and can cover additional transportation expenses incurred to return home.

Emergency Medical benefits can cover treatment for travelers who unexpectedly contract Covid-19 while traveling. This can include reimbursement for hospital stays, testing costs, ambulance services, doctor bills, and lab work.

Travel Delay coverage can cover the cost of your accommodations and meals during quarantine if you have contracted the virus while traveling and cannot return home. This coverage may be extended up to seven days if you are forced to stay beyond your return date due to a positive test.

It’s important to note, a policyholder must test positive for Covid-19 for these benefits to apply. Most travel insurance policies will not provide coverage if you visit a state or a country that has a mandatory quarantine in place upon your arrival unless you have tested positive for Covid-19 and your plan coverage for coronavirus.
