Cancellation

Would I be able to cancel if I encountered an unexpected complication during a surgery that was scheduled before my trip?

Short Answer

If you encounter an unexpected complication during a scheduled surgery before your trip, some providers may provide Trip Cancellation coverage if your policy includes Pre-Existing Condition coverage.

More Detail

If you have a planned surgery before a trip you can still purchase a travel insurance policy, as long as you are considered stable when the policy is purchased.

In order for you to have any Trip Cancellation or medical benefits related to the surgery, your policy must include the Pre-Existing Medical benefit waiver. This provides coverage for known conditions that you have recently received treatment, diagnosis, or advice for, and may include a scheduled surgery prior to departure.

If there is an unexpected complication during the scheduled surgery that restricts you from being able to depart, and you have Pre-Existing condition coverage, you may be covered, depending on your policy, to cancel your trip and be reimbursed for any prepaid and non-refundable trip costs.

This information can vary based on the travel insurance policy. Please review the policy certificate to verify coverage.
