What is Common Carrier AD&D Travel Insurance?

Common Carrier AD&D, short for Common Carrier Accidental Death and Dismemberment, is a travel insurance benefit that provides a cash payment in the event of accidental loss of life or limb that occurs while traveling on a common carrier during a covered trip. A common carrier is typically defined as any public and ticketed mode of transportation, such as flight, train, or bus.

Most travel insurance policies will include some form of accident insurance coverage. Other types of AD&D coverage include 24-Hour AD&D and Flight Only AD&D. Exclusions, coverage limits, and limitations differ by travel insurance plan.

What Does Common Carrier AD&D Cover?

Common Carrier AD&D insurance covers travelers that experience loss as a result of an accident while riding on, boarding, or alighting a common carrier. Coverage does not typically extend to pilots, operators, or crew members.

Injuries that are typically covered by accidental death and dismemberment insurance include:

  • Loss of life
  • Loss of sight in one or both eyes
  • Loss of hearing in one or both ears
  • Loss of hands and feet
  • Loss of thumb or index finger

Understanding Coverage Limits for Common Carrier AD&D Insurance

Unlike other travel insurance benefits that work on a reimbursement basis, Common Carrier AD&D provides a lump sum cash payout to the insured person, referred to as a principal sum, when a covered accident occurs. The benefit amount depends on the policy, but typically ranges from $25,000 to $100,000 per traveler.

Travel insurance companies will consider the extent of your loss when determining the percentage of the possible principal sum you are eligible for. For example, a plan may pay 100% of the principal sum if you lose sight in both eyes, and 50% if you lose sight in one eye.

For the exact coverage limits for a specific travel insurance plan, you can reference a policy’s Certificate of Insurance at any time.

Finding a Policy That Offers Common Carrier AD&D

Like other insurance benefits, the Common Carrier AD&D benefit can offer peace of mind and financial protection when traveling. Finding plans with this type of coverage is made simple with modern travel insurance tools.
