Can I cancel if there is a terrorist threat to the country I am traveling to?

Short Answer

Unfortunately, no, standard Trip Cancellation coverage doesn’t provide coverage to cancel your trip due to the threat of a terrorist attack. Policies including the Terrorism benefit can provide coverage if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a terrorist attack.

More Detail

Standard Trip Cancellation coverage will not provide coverage for you to cancel your trip due to the threat of a terrorist attack.

If you wish to cancel your trip due to the threat of a terrorist attack, the Cancel for Any Reason upgrade allows you to cancel your trip for any reason not otherwise specified as covered on the policy. In order to be eligible for Cancel for Any Reason, most policies require you to purchase within 14-21 days of your first trip booking date. Additionally, you must insure 100% of your trip cost, and cancel your trip at least 2-3 days before your departure. Cancel for Any Reason increases the premium by about 40% and provides up to 75% reimbursement of your trip cost.

While the threat of terrorism isn’t generally covered, most Trip Cancellation policies do include coverage for acts of terrorism. In order to be covered to cancel your your trip due to terrorism, a specific act must occur and must meet your policy’s definition of “terrorism” within the Trip Cancellation benefit.
