Choosing not to travel due to terrorist threats is generally not a covered reason under any travel insurance policy’s Trip Cancellation coverage. Policies including the Terrorism benefit can provide coverage if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a terrorist attack.
While the threat of terrorism isn’t generally covered, most Trip Cancellation policies do include coverage for acts of terrorism. In order for a traveler to be covered to cancel their trip due to terrorism, a specific act must occur and must meet their policy’s definition of “terrorism” under the Trip Cancellation benefit.
Travel insurance is designed to reimburse travelers who are unable to travel for unforeseen reasons outside of their control. Deciding not to take a trip due to fear or loss of enjoyment is not considered a covered reason under any Trip Cancellation policy.
If a you would like the option to be able to cancel your trip due to the threat of terrorism, we recommend purchasing a policy with the Cancel for Any Reason upgrade, which allows you to cancel your trip for a reason not otherwise specified as covered on the policy. In order to be eligible for Cancel for Any Reason, most policies require that you purchase your policy within 14-21 days of your initial booking date. Additionally, you must insure 100% of your trip cost, and cancel your trip at least 2-3 days before your departure. Cancel for Any Reason increases the premium by about 40% and provides up to 75% reimbursement of your trip cost.
