U.S. Embassy Berlin informs U.S. citizens that on December 19 a truck drove into the Christmas Market at Breitscheidplatz. Police have surrounded the area. U.S. citizens in Germany are encouraged to avoid the area of Breitscheidplatz. We urge U.S. citizens in Berlin to contact family members and loved ones to notify them that you are safe.

At this time German Police are reporting nine deaths and 50 injured and are concerned this is a possible terrorist incident. We are working with local authorities to determine if any U.S. citizens were injured in the event. Avoid the area, monitor local press for updates, and exercise caution if you are in the vicinity.
Terrorism remains a concern across Europe, particularly during the holiday period, and we encourage you to review the Europe Travel Alert.
