Hurricane Fred has strengthened in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean near the Cape Verde Islands. Fred was located about 45 miles east-southeast of Ribeira Brava in the Cape Verde Islands as of late Monday morning. Top sustained winds had increased to 85 mph, making Fred a Category 1 hurricane.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall are likely as Fred moves through the Cape Verde Islands Monday into early Tuesday morning. A hurricane warning has been issued for the Cape Verde Islands and this is likely the first hurricane warning on record issued there. Fred will weaken later this week in the open Atlantic Ocean and is no threat to the Caribbean or the United States.
