Can I cancel my upcoming trip to Europe because of the attack in Brussels?

Last Updated:

If you travel insurance policy includes Terrorism coverage and your upcoming trip to Europe includes a stop in or near Brussels, you may be covered to cancel your upcoming trip.

The Trip Cancellation benefit is designed to provide coverage for unforeseen events that occur after you purchase your policy. As of March 22, 2016, this event is no longer considered unforeseen. If you purchased a policy on or after this date, you will not have coverage for the events relating to the Brussels terrorist attacks.

If you purchased a policy prior to March 22, 2016, and your travel insurance policy includes Terrorism coverage within the Trip Cancellation benefit, you may be covered to cancel your upcoming trip.

Many policies that include coverage for Terrorism also require that the attack occurred within a certain number of miles from a city listed on your itinerary. If your travel plans do not include Brussels or the surrounding area, then this coverage may not apply.

Unfortunately, the fear of traveling to Europe in general would not be covered under the normal Trip Cancellation benefit. The only option for this case would be a policy which includes the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade. This benefit is separate from the normal Trip Cancellation benefit and allows you to cancel for any reason, even if you just change your mind.

However, in order to qualify for Cancel For Any Reason you must insure 100% of your trip cost, purchase the policy within 14-30 days after your initial booking for the trip was made, and cancel your trip at least 2-3 days prior to your scheduled departure date. Additionally, when using the Cancel For Any Reason benefit, you will only be reimbursed up to 75% of your trip cost.

To determine if your specific policy covers the Brussels terrorist attacks on March 22, 2016, contact your travel insurance provider to understand your coverage and, if necessary, begin the claims process. Contact information for each provider can be found on your certificate, as well as in our Claims information center.
