According to a statement from federal officials on Friday, 6 January, the active shooter situation at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) has been resolved, with the shooter in custody. Officials confirmed that six people were wounded in the incident, and five people have been killed. Roads reopened Saturday morning for passengers and airport employees to reach the airport, according to its Twitter feed. Travelers intending to fly to or from FLL in the immediate to medium-term are advised to contact their travel providers to ascertain the status of their flights before attempting to travel to the airport.

As of 01/09/2017, the U.S. Department of State has not identified this as a terrorist attack. If and when they do, these tragic events may meet the guidelines and requirements for coverage under certain GeoBlue travel medical plans.

Tin Leg

On Friday, January 6, 2017, a shooting occurred inside the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

As of January 10, 2017, the U.S. Department of State has not declared the shooting an act of terrorism.

What you need to know about your policy:
The Fort Lauderdale airport shooting occurred on January 6, 2017. After this time, it is no longer considered an unforeseen event and coverage related to the attack is no longer available for Tin Leg policies purchased. Tin Leg policies purchased prior to January 6, 2017, may provide limited benefits related to the shooting and subsequent airport closure.

The following benefit is available to Tin Leg policyholders (prior to 1/6/17) impacted by the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting: Travel Delay

Travel Delay coverage for the shooting:
Tin Leg’s Travel Delay benefit covers any delay of a common carrier. This includes travelers whose flights were delayed or outright cancelled as a result of the airport shooting and subsequent closure. Coverage extends to travelers departing out of any airport, whose flights were delayed or cancelled as a result of the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting.

For an event to be covered under the Trip Delay benefit within Tin Leg policies, it must meet the following requirements for minimum length of delay:

  • Tin Leg Economy policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Standard policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 6 consecutive hours

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption are currently not available.
The airport shooting and closure does not meet any of the covered reasons under Tin Leg’s Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage. Coverage will remain unavailable unless the U.S. Department of State deems the event a terrorist attack.
