Coverage Alert – Bárdarbunga Volcano

As of August 22, 2014, Bárdarbunga Volcano is a known event.

An eruption of the Bárdarbunga volcano in Iceland has the potential to disrupt travel to and through Iceland and other affected countries.  We are continuing to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as necessary.  Customers who need help should contact our Travel Assistance Department at the number listed on their travel insurance policy.  As of August 22, 2014, the potential eruption of this volcano is considered a reasonably foreseeable event.

Allianz Global Assistance customers who purchased their travel insurance policy prior to August 22, 2014, may receive trip cancellation, trip interruption or travel delay benefits if their travel plans are affected by service cessations and delays caused by this event.  Policies purchased on or after August 22nd may not provide coverage for claims related directly or indirectly to this potential eruption.

Please review your Letter of Confirmation and Certificate of Insurance/Policy to read details about the coverage that you’ve purchased.  Customers who believe they have a covered claim are encouraged to file a claim.  For faster service, please visit allianztravelinsurance.com and click “file a claim.”

For your convenience, below you will find information about Travel Delay and Trip Cancellation/Interruption benefits which are commonly utilized in similar events.*  Note that coverage under your policy may differ from what is described here—consult your policy for details of your coverage, or contact us directly.

Travel Delay

If your letter of confirmation lists Travel Delay as a benefit, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for additional out of pocket meals, lodging or transportation expenses incurred as a result of a travel delay of six or more consecutive hours (please note: this benefit has a per person, per day maximum as well as a policy maximum). Some policies may also provide coverage for pre-paid, non-refundable expenses lost due to Travel Delay.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption

You may qualify for Trip Cancellation/Interruption benefits if your travel supplier has experienced a complete cessation of services on your route for at least 12 or 24 hours (depending on the travel insurance product) due to the natural disaster.

In light of the recent eruption of the Bardarbunga Volcano in Iceland, this incident is no longer considered an unforeseen event effective August 30th.

 
For Travel policies that offer coverage for inclement weather and natural disasters, please note that there is no coverage for this event under any plans purchased after this date. Trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits are not payable if inclement weather or a natural disaster occurs on or before the effective date of the policy.
 
This notice applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the effective date of this notice and covering travel during such time. It does not apply to new policies that cover travel after the event has passed.

Among the several benefits included in our international Atlas Travel medical plan, coverage for injury or illness sustained from natural disasters, including the recent Icelandic volcanic eruption, is provided at no additional cost. In the event emergency medical evacuation is required, all Atlas Travel policies include a $500,000 evacuation benefit. We are aware that natural disasters can occur at any time, and as a result Atlas Travel also includes benefits to assist the member when displaced from paid lodging due to a natural disaster. Despite coverage during these conditions, we highly recommend travelers monitor conditions and travel warnings, and proceed accordingly with caution.

Tin Leg
The Bardarbunga volcano erupted in Iceland on Saturday, August 30th, 2014. Any Tin Leg plans purchased after the eruption on August 30th, will not cover any losses related to the Bardarbunga volcano. As of Saturday August 30th, 2014, this incident is no longer considered unforeseen.

Travelers who purchased a Tin Leg, Economy, Standard or Luxury policy prior to the eruption, may be eligible for cancellation, interruption or travel delay benefits.

Tin Leg customers who have purchased a policy prior to Bardarbunga’s eruption are strongly urged to review their coverage as some benefits, including trip cancellation, interruption, travel delay and non-medical evacuation, may be applied to this situation.

Another volcano threatens to spread ash, smoke and steam causing travel disruptions yet again in the Iceland area.
