As of today, 4/7/17, at 4:00pm ET, U.S. Government has not declared the Stockholm Sweden truck attack as an act of terrorism. This declaration is required to activate coverage under our April travel insurance policies. April and underwriter will continue to monitor the situation and advise if the current position changes.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

In the wake of the Stockholm truck attack on April 7, 2017, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection is prepared to assist all of its customers impacted by the attack.

Should the U.S. government classify the attack as an act of terrorism, terrorism-related coverage will be in effect, since a terrorist incident is a named peril under Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage. In order to qualify for coverage, policies must have been purchased prior to 4/7/17. Here is the coverage wording from the Description of Coverage:

“a Terrorist Incident in a City listed on the Insured’s itinerary within 30 days of the Insured’s scheduled arrival;”

“Coverage would be in effect if purchased by 4/7/17 and if plan included Terrorism as a named peril.”

On Friday April 7, the Swedish Security Service said four people were killed and 12 injured just before 3 pm local time when a stolen truck was driven into pedestrians on a shopping street in the center of Stockholm. Stockholm police made an arrest in connection with the incident. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but vehicles have been common weapons in recent extremist attacks.

As of Monday, April 10, 2017 this event has not been identified as a terrorist attack. If it is, this tragic event may meet the guidelines and requirements for coverage under our HTH TripProtector plans.

This same city must not have experienced a Terrorist Incident within the ninety (90) days prior to the Terrorist Incident that is causing the cancellation of Your Trip. Tin Leg

On April 7, 2017, a suspect hijacked a truck and drove into a crowd of people in Stockholm, Sweden, killing multiple people and injuring many others.

What you need to know about your policy:
On April 7, 2017, the U.S. Department of State officially deemed the incident an act of terrorism, meaning
there may be coverage for Tin Leg customers to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to April 7.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur on or after the policy’s effective date and must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It also must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
