WOW Air Closure – Provider Position Statements

Squaremouth’s travel insurance providers give their official position statements explaining coverage for the sudden closure of WOW Air that occurred on March 28, 2019.

International Medical Group® (IMG®) offers our condolences to travelers affected by WOW AIR ceasing operation on Thursday, March 28, 2019.

IMG members who purchased a travel protection plan may receive trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delay, missed connection, or change fee benefits if their planned travel was or is affected by this event.

With reference to coverage under IMG’s iTravelInsured® Lite, SE, and LX plans:

  • Trip Cancellation: Can reimburse nonrefundable trip payments in the event of cancellation, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan, due to:
    • o) Bankruptcy or Default of an airline, cruise line, tour operator, or other travel provider (other than the Travel Supplier, tour operator or travel agency, organization or firm from whom You purchased Your Travel Arrangements supplied by others) causing a complete cessation of travel services more than fourteen (14) days following Your Effective Date. Benefits will be paid due to Bankruptcy or Default of an airline only if no alternate transportation is available. If alternate transportation is available, benefits will be limited to the change fee charged to allow You to transfer to another airline in order to get to Your intended destination. This benefit only applies if the Plan has been purchased within twenty (20) days of the date Your initial deposit/payment for Your Trip is received;

All cancellations must be reported to the Travel Supplier within 72 hours of the event causing the need to cancel. If the event delays the reporting of the cancellation beyond the 72 hours, the event should be reported as soon as possible. Increased amounts of Published Penalties and unused non-refundable Prepaid Payments or Deposits that result from all other delays of reporting beyond 72 hours are not covered.

  • Trip Interruption: Benefits can be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount, for the non-refundable, unused portion of the prepaid expenses for land or water Travel Arrangements and/or the additional transportation costs paid (less the value of the original unused travel ticket) to transport the Insured to their originally scheduled return destination or to join or rejoin their Trip when an Insured must interrupt their trip due to:
    • o) Bankruptcy or Default of an airline, cruise line, tour operator, or other travel provider. (other than the Travel Supplier, tour operator or travel agency, organization or firm from whom You purchased Your Travel Arrangements supplied by others) causing a complete cessation of travel services more than fourteen (14) days following Your Effective Date. Benefits will be paid due to Bankruptcy or Default of an airline only if no alternate transportation is available. If alternate transportation is available, benefits will be limited to the change fee charged to allow You to transfer to another airline in order to get to Your intended destination. This benefit only applies if the Plan has been purchased within twenty (20) days of the date Your initial deposit/payment for the Trip is received;
  • Travel Delay: If an Insured is delayed for 12 hours (6 hours for LX plans) or more while en-route to or from or during a Covered Trip, benefits can be paid, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan, due to:
    • a) any delay of a Common Carrier (the delay must be certified by the Common Carrier)

The Travel Delay benefit can cover reasonable accommodation, meal, telephone call and local transportation expenses incurred, subject to a daily limit. In the SE and LX plans, this can also provide reimbursement for additional kennel fees for an Insured’s dog or cat, internet usage fees, and movie fees. Reimbursement for all items is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the plan.

In addition, benefits provided under IMG’s iTravelInsured SE and LX plans include:

  • Trip Cancellation: Can reimburse nonrefundable trip payments in the event of cancellation, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan, due to:
    • u) a cancellation of Your Trip if Your arrival on the Trip is delayed and causes You to lose fifty percent (50%) or more of the scheduled Trip duration due to the reasons covered under the Missed Connection Benefit.

  • Trip Interruption: Benefits can be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount, for the non-refundable, unused portion of the prepaid expenses for land or water Travel Arrangements and/or the additional transportation costs paid (less the value of the original unused travel ticket) to transport the Insured to their originally scheduled return destination or to join or rejoin their Trip when an Insured must interrupt their trip due to:

  • Missed Connection: If an Insured misses their cruise or tour departure because they are delayed 6 or more hours due to:
    • a) any delay of a Common Carrier (the delay must be certified by the Common Carrier)

Benefits can be paid, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan. The Missed Connection benefit can cover the Insured’s additional transportation cost to join their trip and the insured’s prepaid expenses for their unused land or water travel arrangements. Subject to a daily limit, the Missed Connection benefit can also cover reasonable accommodation and meal expenses, which (i) are necessarily incurred by the Insured, (ii) for which the Insured has proof of purchase and (iii) which were not paid for or provided by any other source. Reimbursement for all items is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the plan.

  • Change Fee: The Company canpay up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan for the fees associated with a change to Your air itinerary.

Other benefits may also be available depending on the type of coverage purchased and the specific circumstances of the loss. Please refer to the plan document for complete terms and conditions of coverage.
