Travel Insurance Provider Position Statements on the Nairobi Mall Attack

ST. PETERSBURG, FL September 26, 2013 – The terrorist attack at the Westgate mall in Nairobi on September 21st resulted in over 175 injuries and 62 deaths. Though authorities now have the situation under control, travelers may be reconsidering trips to the nearby area.

Statement Released: 9/23/2013
“For travelers who purchased a Travelex travel protection prior to September 21, 2013, Terrorist Act coverage will be in effect with regards to the recent mall attack occurring in Nairobi. Coverage will apply to travelers who are currently in, or are scheduled to travel to this destination, provided the Terrorist Act occurs within 30 days of your scheduled departure date.”

Statement Released: 9/23/2013
“Customers are strongly encouraged to read their Description of Coverage or Insurance Policy for details regarding their available coverage.  For plans that do offer coverage for terrorist acts, please note that there is no coverage for this specific act under any plans purchased on or after Saturday, September 21, 2013.  Please contact CSA Travel Protection with questions.”

HCC Medical Insurance Services
Statement Released: 9/23/2013
“HCCMIS excludes coverage for terrorism related claims if the US Department of State has issued a travel warning and the member has chosen or refused to depart from that country after the travel warning is issued. The US Department of State issued a travel warning in the country of Kenya on July 5th, 2013.”

Statement Released: 9/24/2013
“iTravelInsured plans would not provide coverage against a “Terrorist Incident” occurring in Nairobi if travel  insurance is purchased on September 22, 2013 or later.  Nairobi and the area within 120 miles of Nairobi must remain incident free for at least 90 days and no travel warnings issued by the U.S. State Department in order for a “Terrorist Incident” to be covered for Nairobi in the future.”
