    Hello,
Unfortunately, I was unable to go on my trip. The flight was to Puerto Vallarta during the crisis and I spent a day in the Dallas Airport as flights were diverted, delayed and cancelled. I was fortunate enough to be able to get a flight back home and sleep in my own bed after being up for 22 hours.
I contacted Berkshire Hathaway via email and was told that they did not consider this event as “terrorism” as it did not fir their definition, part of which is “attempt to influence the government” which I vehemently disagree. They want to limit the actions as “retaliatory “. They said I could fill out a claim online. The link on their web page simply gave me the 18 page of describing my contract, but no link for filing. I have since called and the gentleman on the phone was lovely, sent an email to me with a list of documents needed and the link to where these documents should be sent.
American Airlines was great and I think the magic was going direct to the customer service center before my flight was even cancelled. I was updated constantly by the trip manager who was already in Puerto Vallarta (with her mother and 2 year old daughter and husband) about the shelter in place and roads being shut down, buses burned. It was easy to decide not to go. American Airlines reimbursed me for all but $138.00 of the airfare. I hope to have some resolution; with the history of cartels, the disappeared ones and the history of influence on the Mexican governance, this fits the definition of influencing governance.

I had been sick during my trip, so I called the 24 hours Customer Service about seeing a specialist/doctor. However, the Customer Service said she couldn't locate my policy , so she was not sure whether or not I would be covered. I didn't receive an official travel insurance policy, but I had the proof that I had paid for it (my credit card was debited). It really made me very uncomfortable. Also, I was not feeling very well, and I needed to see the doctor. Since it was on Sunday, no one could be able to get me the information. I was told to go to the Emergency Room, but it was located 2 an half hours from where I stayed. Finally I gave up seeing the doctor and just waited at the place I stayed to see I would feel better. If not, I would rather go to the government emergency room, which took me 10 mins for commute, though the waiting time might be 8 hours. The reason why I purchased Travel Insurance was mainly for medical reasons. If I had already paid and the customer service said she couldn't locate my policy (though I had already told her my name, DOB, the payment date for the period covered), I guess that should be good enough for her to figure out my policy. The answer was NO. Then how could I feel comfortable to see a private doctor? I don't like government medical services in Hong Kong, because it always takes forever to see the patients (as the fees are very low and affordable). I bought Travel Insurance, to save my time and the expensive medical expenses. However, it seems to me that the experience I had was not satisfactory.

I really want to hear from you and to instruct me what I can do next time (if I decide to try Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

We're very sorry to hear that you became ill during your trip and that your experience while seeking assistance was unsatisfactory. We also sincerely apologize that our customer service representative was unable to verify your coverage at the time of your call. This was our oversight, and we can confirm that your coverage was fully purchased and in place. We are reviewing the situation to fully understand what occurred and will address any training opportunities to ensure this does not happen again.

For future reference, we normally send policy documents by email within seconds of purchase, which include phone numbers for assistance as well as a full copy of your policy. However, the responsibility to verify your coverage during your call was ours, and we apologize that this was not handled correctly. Our team is always available to answer questions at any point before or during your coverage.

Finally, if you would like to file a claim for any expenses you incurred as a result of your illness, you are welcome to do so. We're here to support you through the process and are happy to help with any questions.

When my wife got a terrible case of the flu 24 hours into our trip, I called customer service twice about the steps for filing a claim. One suggestion is that CSRs be more forthcoming with specific details. I had to ask a lot of questions to get key answers that allowed us to successfully file a claim. But I'm an insurance professional. So I know more than the average citizen. Many other people might have been left having not taken the requisite steps to file a successful claim. If the goal is to intentionally not share too much information so people can't file claims or can't file successful claims, then you're doing great. If you want people to be able to use the coverage they've paid for, reps should be trained either tell people what steps they need to take or to direct them to your website where those steps might readily available.

That being said, the claims representative I spoke to after we were forced to abandon our trip was super helpful and very prompt in her assistance. The emails from the company and the online portal for filing were all well laid out and easy to use. The claim was handled VERY quickly, if not slightly inaccurately. But it seemed to be difficult to file any kind of appeal to the claim or to work with the adjuster on how it was inaccurate and get it fixed. In the end, we decided the few hundred dollars difference was not worth our time or hassle. Not sure if calling and filing an appeal of some kind would have gotten us anywhere. The money was already direct deposited into our checking account--so I'm not even sure it could have been undone at that point.

Overall, will buy from Squaremouth again and will seek best value, and wouldn't be married to BH or any other provider. I'd give BH a 3.75 to perhaps 4 out of 5 rating.

I haven't been able to fill the paperwork out because my husband have been sick and in and out of the hospital and I've been spending time with him. Once I get situated I'll be filling out the paperwork that is needed

It has been almost two months since I filed the claim. Despite providing all the documents necessary, they are foot dragging and seems to just dont provide feedback. Terrible experience, will never use this provider again.

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback on your experience, we truly appreciate it. It appears the original documents submitted were in a format we weren’t able to open, and we apologize for the delay this caused. We’ve now reviewed the documents that were resubmitted, and our claims examiner was able to approve your claim yesterday (2/17). You should have received an email with the outcome. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our claims team — we’re happy to help.

Squaremouth was easy to deal with. I called Berkshire Hathaway to ask questions and they seemed to have good customer service. Thankfully I didn't have to use the insurance!

This is a scam. The process required for submitting a claim regarding a 24-hour delay in our trip would take hours of my (and others') time. That level of documentation is not necessary to show that the delay occurred. I will never purchase insurance with Berkshire Hathaway, and encourage you to drop them as a provider.

We’re sorry to hear about your frustration with the claims process and appreciate you sharing your experience. When a claim is submitted, we’re required to request certain documentation—such as your original trip itinerary, proof of payment, airline tickets, and any records explaining the reason for the cancellation, delay, or interruption. We also ask for receipts for any out‑of‑pocket expenses related to the claim.

These requests are standard across the travel insurance industry and help us verify coverage, protect our customers, and ensure claims are reviewed accurately and as quickly as possible. While we understand that gathering paperwork can feel inconvenient, this process allows us to pay valid claims fairly and responsibly.

If you have questions about what’s needed or need help submitting documents, our claims team is always happy to assist.

I have filed a claim and followed up about it and have received only a confirmation email. It has been more than 3 months since my trip and I qualify for a partial or full refund based on what happened with my travel and the insurance I got.

They have not messaged me or anything and I have no idea where in the process it is or if my claim has been thrown out or what happened.

Im very upset and frustrated. Not only was my trip ruined because my flights were delayed so much I missed 2 connection and had to buy a bus ticket in mexico to my final location, but the insurance plan I purchased was apparently wasted money.

We were pleased with your company from beginning to end.
Although we didn’t claimed anything either.
    Thank you
