Our Take: Aegis stands out as one of the most affordable providers on Squaremouth, offering unique features like its direct pay “Stress Less” benefit, build-it-yourself customizations, and pre-existing condition coverage for cruises that you can purchase up to the final cruise payment. However, a few providers offer lower-priced plans with higher coverage for Emergency Medical and pre-existing conditions.

Is Aegis a Good Travel Insurance Provider?

Aegis travel insurance has been a trusted choice for over 40 years and is well suited for budget-conscious travelers needing comprehensive coverage at a relatively low price.

One feature that sets Aegis apart is its “Stress Less” benefit, which can directly pay for certain covered events, saving you from having to submit a claim for reimbursement. No other provider on our site offers this feature.

Aegis has customizable plans with add-ons for medical coverage, medical evacuation, and many other benefits. It also has standout cruise coverage, due to the ability to get pre-existing condition coverage up to your final cruise payment.

Aegis offers more than 40 years in the travel insurance industry and holds an A+ (Superior) rating from A.M. Best. More than 1,400 Squaremouth customers have reviewed Aegis, giving it an average rating of 4.1 out 5, with fewer than 0.2% negative reviews.

However, providers including IMG, Trawick, and Tin Leg offer plans that can cost less than Aegis’ lowest-tier Go Ready Choice plan while automatically including pre-existing condition coverage and higher Emergency Medical limits.

What Does Aegis Travel Insurance Cover?

Aegis has 4 plans on our site that cover all the key benefits, including Emergency Medical, Medical Evacuation, Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Baggage Loss and Delay. The limits on these benefits vary by plan and may be adjustable, depending on the plan.

Its Go Ready Choice and Pandemic Plus plans cover typical disruptions, including Emergency Medical, Medical Evacuation, Trip Cancellation, and Trip Interruption. Its Go Ready Cruise plan covers all this, plus has some cruise-specific benefits, like missed cruise departures. Finally, its Annual Preferred plan covers the same basic travel disruptions, but with very low limits for Trip Cancellation and Interruption.

Optional Upgrades & Customization Options

Aegis is one of the most customizable providers on the market, letting you choose the exact coverage limits you want for the benefits that matter most to you.

The advantage is that you aren’t forced to upgrade your whole plan to a higher tier if you want higher coverage in a certain area.

Customizable Coverage Limits:

Optional Add-Ons

  • Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) covering 50%-75% of prepaid, non-refundable trip costs
  • Cancellation for work reasons (Go Ready Choice plan)
  • Pre-existing condition waiver (Go Ready Choice plan)
  • Sports equipment loss and delay (Go Ready Choice plan)
  • Rental car damage waiver, up to $50,000 Primary coverage (Go Ready Choice plan)

Keep in mind that some of these upgrades, particularly pre-existing condition coverage, are standard benefits on many plans. Adding many upgrades to a plan can significantly increase the premium. You can use our quote form to see if you can find plans with built-in coverage for these for benefits for less.

How Does the Aegis “Stress Less” Benefit Work?

“Stress Less” is Aegis’ branded name for its ability to pay certain expenses directly for you. This means that for certain scenarios, you don’t need to file a standard claim and wait for reimbursement, as Aegis’ Emergency Assistance team will arrange payment for eligible expenses directly.

This benefit is designed to help you avoid the hassle of traditional claims and reduce the risk of having claims delayed or denied due to misunderstandings.

Important caveats to be aware of with this benefit:

  • The Stress Less benefit only applies to certain scenarios which vary from plan to plan, often including Trip Interruption, Travel Delay, Missed Connection, Medical, Dental, and Emergency Assistance and Transportation.
  • To use this benefit, you must call Aegis immediately, during the covered event, and have them arrange services like hotel bookings and hospital care.
  • Your coverage limits still apply, meaning Aegis can only pay up to your plan’s limit for covered expenses.
  • This service is electronic and does not work at cash-only establishments.

The Stress Less benefit is a unique service that no other insurer on our site offers, and it comes included on all Aegis plans, though which benefits it applies to varies by plan.

Notable Exclusions With Aegis

Along with common exclusions like foreseen events and illegal activities, Aegis has a few more unique exclusions that you should be aware of:

  • Sports and activities:
Aegis excludes a fair number of hazardous activities, including scuba diving deeper than 75 feet, with no sports and activities upgrade, so it may not be ideal for an adventure trip with hazardous activities.
  • Illnesses that aren’t severely disabling:
Under all plans except Pandemic Plus, Aegis requires a doctor to confirm that an illness or injury is so disabling that it prevents you from taking your trip. This is somewhat stricter than many plans, which typically just require your physician’s recommendation not to travel.
  • Pre-existing conditions:
While Pandemic Plus and GoReady Cruise have pre-existing conditions waivers, GoReady Choice charges a significant amount to add a waiver to your plan. Its annual plan doesn’t offer a waiver at all.
  • Loss or damage of electronic items (GoReady Choice Plan only):
Aegis doesn’t cover lost or damaged cell phones, computers, or other electronics under its Go Ready Choice plan unless you purchase the Baggage Loss upgrade. Note, other Aegis plans automatically cover electronics under baggage insurance.

How Much Is Aegis Travel Insurance?

Aegis is one of the most affordable travel insurance providers on our platform. Its comprehensive travel insurance plans rank as the 5th least expensive, with an average premium of ~$194.

Comprehensive travel insurance plans typically cost between 4% and 10% of the total trip cost. Aegis’ policies, however, generally cost between 7% and 9%, making them more expensive on the low end but slightly less expensive than average on the high end.

Which Aegis Plan is Right For Me?

The best Aegis plan for you depends entirely on your needs. Rather than tiers of plans, they offer four very different plan types for different audiences.

Consider choosing:

  • Go Ready Choice if you’re a healthy traveler who wants the lowest-cost coverage for a single trip, and you don’t need pre-existing condition coverage.
  • Go Ready Pandemic Plus if you’re a senior, or you have a pre-existing condition and want coverage at the lowest price among the plans.
  • Go Ready Cruise if you want cruise-specific benefits, including adequate Emergency Medical coverage, coverage for missed cruise departures, and higher Baggage Loss and Baggage Delay limits. It also offers a pre-existing condition waiver up to your final cruise payment, a unique benefit that no other cruise insurance plan on our site currently offers.
  • Annual Preferred if you’re a younger traveler without pre-existing medical conditions who travels frequently and wants to save on coverage.

How Does Aegis’ Coverage Compare to Competitors?

Aegis offers solid coverage for the price, covering many of the same benefits as higher-priced plans. One of its standout benefits is its Trip Delay coverage of up to $2,000 per person, which is much higher than most plans.

That said, you can find lower-priced plans than Aegis’ Go Ready Choice plan. Plans from IMG, Trawick, and Tin Leg automatically include pre-existing coverage and high limits for Emergency Medical coverage.

Is Aegis Worth the Cost?

As one of the most affordable providers on the market, Aegis offers strong value for the money, and is worth considering if cost and flexibility are important to you. Its Stress Less benefit and customizable plans are markedly Aegis’ best features.

While a few insurers outside our site like Allianz offer similar benefits, Aegis is the only insurer on Squaremouth that offers this direct pay option, and it extends it to a broader array of benefits than most of its competitors.

However, Aegis isn’t always the lowest-cost option. If price is a priority, we recommend using our quote form to compare prices and coverage. You may be able to find lower-cost plans with stronger medical benefits than some Aegis, including the alternatives below:

FAQs: Aegis

Aegis overall has a good customer service record, but ranks 18 out of our 21 providers for customer service during a claim, so it may be more difficult than average for claims filing.

That said, how easy it is to file a claim always depends on the complexity of the claim, how knowledgeable you are about your policy’s terms, and whether you have the proper documentation.

The benefit of buying through Squaremouth is that we offer built-in claims advocacy service through our Zero Complaints Guarantee, so you aren’t left to work through claims alone.

Aegis can pay for certain benefits directly via its Stress Less feature, but its availability depends on your exact plan and coverage scenario. For benefits not under the Stress Less feature, you must file a claim and wait for reimbursement.

Adding CFAR to Aegis policies makes sense when your trip expenses exceed the cost of a CFAR upgrade, and you have a high chance of cancelling for a non-covered reason, like a hurricane that’s already been announced or fear of traveling to a certain region.

Adding CFAR raises your premium by 40%-60%, but it gives you the flexibility to cancel your trip for any reason and still be refunded for 50-75% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses.

$50,000 of Emergency Medical insurance is okay if you plan to stay within the United States, but is generally too low for international travel, even for young healthy travelers.

We recommend at least $100,000 of Emergency Medical insurance for international travel since U.S. health insurance generally won’t cover medical care abroad, and a major medical emergency could surpass this limit.

The maximum trip length depends on the plan. The Go Ready Choice plan covers trips up to 60 days, Go Ready Pandemic Plus and Go Ready Cruise cover trips up to 90 days, and the Go Ready Annual plan covers trips up to 31 days.

Aegis offers a very wide range of travel insurance options for customers. Their coverage falls into two general categories:

  • Single-trip plans: Aegis offers 3 policies for single trips: Go Ready Choice, Go Ready Pandemic Plus, and Go Ready cruise. These policies all offer comprehensive cancellation coverage, medical coverage, delay coverage, and coverage for your personal belongings, as well as unique coverages per policy that make them a good fit for different traveler types.
  • Annual travel insurance: Aegis’ Annual plan provides medical coverage and some other benefits for multiple trips over the course of a 12-month period.

Yes, Aegis offers coverage for pre-existing conditions on its Go Ready Pandemic Plus and Go Ready Cruise plans, but this coverage is also an optional upgrade on the Go Ready Choice policy.

  • Aegis Go Ready Choice and Pandemic Plus plans offer waivers up to 14 days after your initial trip deposit.
  • Aegis Cruise plan lets you qualify for a waiver up to your final cruise payment, a unique benefit that no other plan on our site currently offers.

It depends on the situation. Aegis will generally arrange evacuation to the nearest adequate hospital. However, Aegis and your attending physician may opt to route you to a hospital in your home country if deemed medically necessary.
