Squaremouth’s Travel Insurance Recommendations

Although France does not require travel insurance, Squaremouth still recommends travelers visiting the country purchase a travel insurance policy. The recommended coverage can vary depending on each traveler’s trip details. However, in general, we recommend a policy with at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical benefits and $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage for all international destinations to potentially cover an unforeseen illness or injury.

Emergency Medical benefits can reimburse a traveler for expenses related to an unforeseen illness or injury. Medical Evacuation coverage can provide reimbursement for travelers who are evacuated to the nearest adequate medical facility from an unforeseen illness or injury.

For travelers concerned about potentially losing their prepaid or non-refundable trip costs, Squaremouth recommends Trip Cancellation coverage. The Trip Cancellation benefit can reimburse up to 100% of a traveler’s trip costs – such as flights, hotels or tours – if they need to cancel their trip before their departure date for a reason listed as covered by their policy.

Most commonly, these reasons can include an unforeseen illness, injury, or death of a traveler, their traveling companion, or a non-traveling family member. Most policies with Trip Cancellation include coverage for travelers who contract Covid-19. Other covered reasons can include inclement weather preventing a traveler from reaching their destination, a terrorist incident, or a natural disaster, among others.

Many policies with the Trip Cancellation benefit also include Trip Interruption benefits as well. Trip Interruption is a post-departure benefit that can reimburse the policyholder for up to 100% to 200% of the missed trip costs in the event of an unforeseen covered event. These events may include illness, injury, death of a family member, natural disaster, or terrorist attack.
