Will travel insurance cover me to cancel my flight because I don’t want to fly on a Boeing 737 Max 8?

Last Updated:

Unfortunately, standard policies do not provide coverage for travelers choosing to change or cancel their trip due to fear or concerns about the aircraft.

Canceling due to fear or safety concerns is a common exclusion under all travel insurance policies. Therefore, travelers who do not want to take their trip because they are scheduled to fly on a Boeing 737 Max 8 likely will not be covered.

The only coverage that could be applicable for travelers who want to change or cancel due to fear is the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade. This benefit can refund travelers up to 75% of their trip costs if they cancel at least 2-3 days before their departure. To be eligible for this benefit, a traveler must buy their policy within 21 days of their initial trip payment and insure their entire trip cost.
