Berkshire Hathaway customers find customer service agents helpful and easy to reach. While the provider has an efficient claims process, some customers report frustration with the communication and clarity while waiting for reimbursement.
The policy only covers you for 7 days after the expiration date. If you were seriously ill you could be hospitalized far longer.
Was not able to take the trip
Was not able to get a refund or delay for use in the future
Trip was cancelled until next year, same timing. Have already taken out a policy with Berkshire for upcoming trip in 2023
My trip was cancelled by the event planner a month prior to departure and I received a full refund for the trip.
However I was not able to get a refund for my trip insurance with Berkshire Hathaway. My friends who purchased policies with other companies were granted full refunds.
I was considering canceling my trip due to covid omicron outbreaks. I was told that we would not have any covered reason for a claim. We decided to go on the trip.
We had to change our return date in the middle of our trip for a reason that would have only been partially covered, so we do not expect that to be paid. However, it became apparent that there is no mechanism in the policy to allow for travel changes whilst on the trip, even for additional cost. Further, it's virtually impossible to find reasonable coverage for a trip you're already on, so we had to travel for an extra week including a 22hr flight without coverage. This was disappointing.
Given the evolving Covid situation and CDC guidance, I sought clarification of my coverage. I called the Customer Service number but there was no answer. I left a message but no one called back. Only after waiting over 24 hours was I able to speak to someone.
I would not buy from Berkshire Hathaway. My trip was cancelled because the country I was going to stopped allowing visitors, yet Berkshire Hathaway would not allow me to cancel the insurance even though there was not going to be a trip. So I was not able to get a refund. A bit like buying home insurance for a house purchase that does not get through escrow.
I increased my coverage before travel. They were very helpful.
To date, we have been able to interact with a real person who has been helpful in explaining how to file information towards our claim. Our trip was interrupted by my positive Covid test on 1/5/22 which required us to quarantine in a Quito, Ecuador hotel rather than finish with our itinerary at the rain forest in Mashpi. We did not require anything but symptomatic meds and no local medical intervention was required. We have now a claim number with Berkshire-Hathaway and the appropriate forms. We have been told that reimbursement will occur after their adjusters review and may take weeks to months which seemed to me to be unnecessarily inefficient given the relative simplicity of what happened to interrupt our trave.
