  • Tin Leg policy: Gold

We have now used Tin Leg for 3 international trips. We have received excellent customer service, and thankfully we have had no issues that required us to file claims.

    Tin Leg policy: Adventure

It would be most helpful if you could explain that adding additional air and hotel purchases will be covered as well after the initial purchase of trip insurance.

I did not file a claim so I have very little experience with Tin Leg. I did contact the customer service center prior to purchase of the policy. All of these interactions where very friendly and my questions were always answered.

Forbes Magazine article pointed me to you and I selected you from other companies based on the best mix of price and coverage. I am glad not to have needed to make a claim but I was confident I would have had your support if I had a claim to make.

Tin Leg is easy to work with. We've made changes to our policy before without any problems.

We bought the policy and, fortunately, had no reason to file a claim.

    Tin Leg policy: Gold

We didn't expect to have to use the policy, but it turned out we had a missed connection on our trip (and the airline was not able to put us on another flight until the next day). At first it appeared that the airline was going to cover our expenses (hotel and food), but after a while it became apparent that they were not going to follow through. We ended up filing a claim with Tin Leg. The process was more cumbersome than I expected. I assumed we'd have to fill out a form of some sort and attach documentation of our claim. However, the process was: fill out a short form on the website, wait for an email, click the link in the email, use the provided form to schedule a phone interview with Tin Leg, wait for the phone interview (was not until nearly a month later), do the phone interview, then wait for follow-up email, click link in follow up email, fill out online form. I then discovered that the online form required many different documents (photo ID, hotel confirmation or voucher, original itinerary, updated itinerary, "proof of purchase," "travel provider invoice, statement, or receipt"), not all of which we had access to. I spent a lot of time filling out forms, communicating with Tin Leg customer service (somehow our email confirmation from the payment of the hotel room wasn't enough, and they needed a credit card statement showing the charge, for example), scanning documents, etc., before finally realizing we just didn't have access to all the documentation they required. The Tin Leg customer service people were always friendly, but the process is onerous and I really wasted a lot of time on something that wasn't helpful at all. I had assumed we'd just be able to show our hotel and food expense for the night we had to stay in the layover city (it seemed logical to me that we obviously missed our connection by the fact that we had to stay overnight), but they required much more than that. Never having had to file a claim before, I did not realize everything we would need. The airline didn't provide us with an updated itinerary (which was one of the things Tin Leg required), and we haven't been able to find our boarding passes, which they seemed to say would be ok also (we probably discarded them after getting home). Overall, I found that the trip insurance was a waste of money and I don't think I'd buy that again. I hope that if we ever needed to use the emergency medical insurance it would be easier to file a claim. Maybe all the travel insurers handle things similarly--I'm not sure, as I've never had to file a claim before. I don't think I'd buy trip insurance again, though, as it seems extremely difficult to make use of it if you ever do need it.
