I have never used my travel insurance for medical treatment, however I worry that I might not get emergency treatment overseas without it.
We bought insurance for a big family trip to New Zealand and it was easy to sign up, the prices were reasonable, the coverage clear and good.
Although the rest of us had no [problems on the trip, my daughter, Emily, missed a connection due to late arrival of her airplane. She was stuck in LA for 24 hours before she could board her next flight and was given a hotel (after two hours of waiting!) and $20 in vouchers for the day but that the restaurant at the hotel only opened at lunch and that she could only use the vouchers at the hotel..
Emily called Tin Leg asking about what if anything, they could do to help. She said the agent was very sympathetic and said that she should keep her receipts for meals and incidentals and to submit to Tin Leg when she returned from her trip. I believe she called late at night and appreciated that someone came on quickly and was very on the ball.
She is pulling together her receipts (only for a few meals) but if the claims process is as easy as the rest of it I intend to use squaremouth and tin leg for all of our longer trips going forward.

Everything was handled easily and professionally, as our travel agent in Cambodia required we have certain coverages. The poicy was put in place within minutes of my contacting the agent. No need for any claims.
I purchased the insurance because my boyfriend had recently been diagnosed with Stage III lung cancer. At the time that we booked our trip, his treatment was supposed to be long over before we were scheduled to leave. However, Keith ran into some complications, his treatment plan changed, and he ended up being in the middle of his radiation treatment during the time we were scheduled to travel.
I spoke with Tin Leg and advised of the situation. I submitted all requested paperwork - which was a ridiculous amount of paperwork to obtain and send - and my claim was denied due to a pre-existing condition.
I am sure that other cancer patients travel while going through treatment. Our intent when we booked our travel, was that Keith would go. We purchase the insurance as a precaution. That ended up being a poor decision since I was still stuck with paying the full balance of vacation and then paid a premium for insurance which served no purpose.

1. You must purchase the policy within 15 days of making your initial trip deposit
2. You and your traveling companion must be considered medically stable when you buy your policy
3. You must insure 100% of your prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses
