I bought trip insurance for a specific portion of our trip, a 5 day hike. Since the airlines moved our flight a day later without explanation, we would have missed the first day of the 5 day hike and would have had to figure out on our own how to meet the tour group on the 2nd day. So we decided to cancel the trip instead. However, we did not cancel our entire trip. Initially I was told that my claim did not qualify since we did not cancel our entire trip. Again, I only insured the 5 day hike portion. Ultimately, my claim was denied. This circumstance did not qualify under trip cancellation. It seems that I should have traveled and then filed a claim. It also seems that even though I did not apply for the cost of the rest of our trip to be insured, your company considered that in denying my claim. My circumstance could apply under your trip cancellation policy but you have chosen to read it a different way in your favor. Again, I do believe that you denied my claim because I did not cancel my entire trip even though that is not what I insured. I will be letting all friends, colleagues and family know that it is not worth buying independent trip insurance through companies such as yours and specifically Starr Indemnity & Liability Insurance Company and Tin Leg Insurance.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Your claim was denied because trip cancellation coverage is for canceling your trip due to unforeseen events. The policy you purchased does not cover cancellations due to a change in plans. We understand this is not the outcome you were hoping for. If you have any further questions, please reach out to your claim adjuster via email.

I always try to be insured when traveling and I find the ease of use with SquareMouth Travel Insurance. I have not yet experience a claim with SquareMouth, but will be doing so shortly as the airline on my recent trip cancelled my flight.

Tin leg seems to be asking for a lot of documentation that has little to do with our claim.

I did not like I had to make an appointment to speak with a rep. Their hours for appointments are not convenient for a working person. I took a day off to accept their appointment time. I held my phone in my hand awaiting their call but no call then I saw an emil pop up I had missed their call. I double checked my phone no missed calls. So I assume they lied about calling me or they dialed the wrong number. I had to take another personal day to await another call from them. Finally, my appointment - they called, and I explained that I was 15 hours late getting home. I had to pay a sitter for another night since I was stuck in Atlanta over night. They informed me they do not cover anything but food for being delayed. I wish I would have known their trip interruption isn't worth the money I spent. I feel like I had a false sense of security but was actually throwing my money down the drain.

I just had my interview with the claim representative, and she was fantastic. We went over everything and she told me what else I needed to turn in when she sends me the claim form and I return it. I will just wait for the claim form and hopefully do what she said and finish all the paperwork they wanted. As I said she was just a wonderful person to talk to and hopefully you can let her superior know that. Thank you

Waiting for the outcome regarding payment. Service was excellent. This is the second trip we have used Tin Leg for our trip insurance. I’ve recommended it to many of our fellow travel friends.

Since I began traveling internationally in 2012, I have purchased your travel insurance policies multiple times. Although I have never filed a claim, I have always viewed purchasing these policies as a source of peace of mind for my wife and me in case something unexpectedly goes wrong. I have also mentioned this in the positive reviews I have posted regarding your travel insurance policies.

However, we did not take the most recent trip to Vancouver from March 18 to March 26, 2025. When we began planning the trip in late December 2024, we purchased a Squaremouth policy. The trip was canceled because I experienced a severe COPD exacerbation a week before departure and had not fully recovered. In other words, I still had significant breathing difficulties for which I was taking medications.

Three days before departure, I decided to cancel the trip instead of risking a stay in a Vancouver hospital on a respirator. American Airlines, the car rental agency, and the reserved airport parking all refunded my prepaid money. Additionally, American Airlines restored the miles I had used to purchase our flights.

The only prepaid amount that was not refunded was the Squaremouth travel insurance policy. I was informed that if I did not cancel within the two-week policy examination period, which was months before, I would forfeit the money if I canceled the trip any time after that two-week window.

Squaremouth has every right to establish its particular policies regarding the purchase of travel insurance. However, I find the “forfeit-after-two-week-policy-examination-period” unfair and unlikely to encourage repeat customers like me. Why should I be required to pay for something I did not use and canceled within 72 hours before the policy became active?

Even if I had chosen the “cancel for any reason” option when I purchased the travel insurance policy months earlier, what would be the point of paying extra for that option when every agency to which I prepaid money, except for you, refunded the prepaid amount without any hassle? Plus, the “cancel for any reason” does not include what you paid for the travel insurance that included that option. Kind of a clever catch-22 situation, wouldn’t you say?

Forfeiting the Squaremouth prepaid travel insurance money won’t cause us any hardship. However, the frustrating unfairness of your “forfeit-after-two-week-policy-examination-period” remains. In response, I will modify my earlier positive public reviews of Squaremouth and share my latest experience. I will also write an updated article for our college retirees’ newsletter with guidance and suggestions based on this experience. Caveat emptor!

We understand your frustration about the non-refund of your policy premium. Travel insurance policies have a "money-back guarantee" period for review and cancellation, as you noted. However, policies are effective immediately upon purchase, which is standard in the industry. The premium covers the risk from this point.

We acknowledge your situation and regret you feel our policy is unfair.
