Nationwide offers five comprehensive policies through Squaremouth, including three specifically designed for cruisers. Additionally, Nationwide stands out by including ‘Interruption for Any Reason’ benefits as standard protection, which is rare among providers.
See how Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company compares to other providers on Squaremouth in customer satisfaction and service quality:
*The overall customer rating is the average of all reviews for the provider since they joined the marketplace.
Customers generally have positive experiences with Nationwide’s customer service, praising agents for being helpful and easy to reach. However, some note that claims can take longer than expected to process, with delays in response times once a claim is filed.
I am stranded in Israel. I will be making a claim once I return to the States.
Nationwide Customer Service is not available on the weekend. When things go wrong while on your trip and you need guidance on what to do and be in compliance with the insurance policy so that a future claim will be accepted, waiting all weekend to speak with someone is infuriating and a lot of valuable time is being lost and wasted, which equates to money.
The on call medical team was at least available at all hours. However, repeatedly over a 3 day period I had to reach back to them to get status on what was an exceedingly slow progress. The team kept blaming the delays on their local representative. I was not in a third world country. This was a western European country. It is unacceptable that there is not a more prompt procedure to expedite medical review and decisions. We were essentially trapped in our location for 3 days trying to get permission to return home and abandon our vacation.
I will also note that the paperwork that is required was emailed to me. On vacation I didn't have a printer and I was in an Airbnb. I had to walk the streets asking hotels if they would be kind enough to print out pages for me on a Sunday morning. The on call medical team should have an online capability for the user to enter the necessary data, even on a mobile device.
My wife sustained an injury on a Saturday night. I began trying to reach the insurance company on Sunday morning. It took until Tuesday evening to arrange transportation back to the United States. That feels terribly slow.

One feature that is mandatory for me in travel insurance is for trip interruption. We had to leave a trip early due to an injury that my wife sustained. Our trip involved 3 cities and we had just arrived in our second city. Our transportation to the third city would have been by plane on a non-refundable ticket. I had accounted for the cost of this flight in our total trip insurance amount.
Nationwide turned down reimbursement for the cost of the flight that we were never able to take because our trip ended prematurely. I appealed that decision and was again turned down. When I spoke to Nationwide's claims company, they directed me to the line in the policy details that they cover "pre-paid unused, non-refundable land or sea expenses to the Travel Suppliers."
Shockingly, they only cover land or sea expenses. They will cover air to return home but any intermediate flight between cities that you are unable to take, forget getting reimbursed by Nationwide. It is hard to believe that they exclude air travel. I have now read the policies of at least half a dozen other insurance companies. Not a single one has this limitation. In other words, every other insurer out there seems to cover intermediate air travel between cities on your destination. I have even read each Nationwide policy offered, meaning up to their Prime level, and this is a standard exclusion that Nationwide applies.
Why would anyone buying trip insurance with trip interruption coverage possibly think that air travel between cities would be explicitly excluded? I would never have thought to read the minute details of a policy prior to purchasing to look for such an exclusion. I can tell you that Nationwide is now off my list of potential policies for all my future trips. Buyer beware. Learn from my unreimbursed lesson.
I tried to reach emergency number listed on my documents, could not get live person. Called nationwide, they put me through and still no live agent. Said to leave message and I did and still have not received a call back. This all occured on 4/27/2025 and today is 05/08/2025. I have filed a claim, hopefully that goes well considering the emergency number did not provide any help at all.

The claims process was fabulous. All of my info that I had provided was taken into consideration and the claim was paid properly. The claims examiner FH was wonderful to work with, so helpful and understanding.
Thank you for being there for us.
Thankfully we didn’t have to use this insurance.
Claim request was sent to nation wide & they say they need more information even though the receipt for medical services was provided to them. Looks like a ploy to deny the claim. We were stuck in a non English speaking country & had to avail of doctor available through tour manager who arranged it for sudden unexpected medical service & medication.
the overall experience was positive, but claims process was slower than I expected
First of all, a major fire at an airport which cancels our flight seems to be an insurable event. But no… the main reason for this negative review is that after the initial round of inquiry, when I submitted my claim, I was asked to submit quite a few more documents regarding our loss. Why would I have to go through this secondary process, which took quite a bit of time, when the original claim would’ve been denied at the initial review because the airport fire was not a coverable event? Why would you waste someone’s time going through a second step of the process when in the initial stage it was clear that the claim itself had no grounds according to your policy? Ridiculous.
After purchasing our policy with Nationwide, we decided to change our cruise destination to another cruise. I reached out to Nationwide and asked to change our policy to the new cruise. Within a very short time, Nationwide complied with our request.
My claim was processed resonably quickly in 18 days, with only one request for additional information. I was disappointed that I received $24.80 less than my expenses with no explaination for the difference. My documented expenses for luggage storage, hotel, meals, transportation, and airport parking totaled $388.46. Without any breakdown of which expenses weren't covered or why, I'm left confused about the reimbursement decision. The lack of transparency in how claims are calculated is disappointing. For future trips, I'll be looking for a travel insurance provider with clearer reimbursement procedures.
I submitted a claim a week ago and have not heard anything. I’m disappointed but hoping it will work out.
