Does Southwest compensate for delayed or lost baggage?

Last Updated:

According to their official policy, Southwest will pay for delayed bags to be delivered and compensate passengers for expenses they experience due to the loss, damage or delay of baggage, up to $3,800. With that said, a travel insurance policy may also be able to provide protection from lost, damaged or delayed baggage.

Travel insurance policies with the Baggage Delay benefit can offer reimbursement for the purchase of clothing, toiletries, and other essential items if a traveler’s luggage is delayed for a specified period of time, usually 12-24 hours.

In addition, travel insurance policies with the Baggage & Personal Items Loss benefit can provide reimbursement for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage. This benefit extends throughout the entirety of the trip, and is not limited to loss or damage caused by the airline.

If your bags are lost, damaged or delayed by Southwest, it’s recommended to call your provider’s 24-Hour Emergency Assistance department to receive help and review your specific policy’s coverage.

This information may vary based on the travel insurance policy. If you have questions about a specific policy, please contact us directly at 800-240-0369. Our customer service representatives are available from 8am to 10pm ET, seven days a week, and are delighted to help!
