On January 10, 2018, the United States Department of State announced a new system for issuing travel advisories for U.S. travelers.

The new travel advisory system gives every country a rating between 1 and 4, explaining the risk of traveling to each country. Threats considered will include crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health, natural disaster, time-limited event, and other.

The new advisory ratings are broken down as follows:

1 – Exercise normal precautions

2- Exercise increased caution

3 – Reconsider travel

4 – Do not travel
