The CDC has issued travel health alerts for Zika Virus outbreaks in more than 40 countries.

The Zika Virus and Travel Insurance Information Center contains a collection of resources, including travel insurance provider position statements, frequently asked questions, and travel alerts related to the Zika virus.

What is Zika Virus?
The Zika virus is an infectious disease spread primarily by mosquito bites. Symptoms are typically mild, but according to the Center for Disease Control, there are reports of the infection leading to “Guillain-Barre syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.” The CDC issued the first Zika virus travel health alerts for the Caribbean, Mexico, and other destinations on January 15, 2016.

This database is regularly updated with travel alerts, frequently asked questions, and new information as the situation progresses. Travel insurance position statements and FAQs included in this Information Center are subject to change at any time.

Travel insurance does not cover travelers to cancel their trip out of fear of contracting the Zika virus. A CDC alert is not a covered reason to cancel a trip on standard travel insurance.

Travelers with Cancel For Any Reason can cancel up to 2-3 days before their trip and receive reimbursement of a portion of their trip cost. Some policies allow travelers to cancel if they become pregnant after they buy the policy, but this is not the standard.

Squaremouth's travel insurance experts are on hand to answer your questions about Zika virus coverage. We are available 24/7, 365 days a year by chat and by phone at 1-800-240-0369.
