If my family member or I contract the Zika Virus, am I covered to cancel my trip?

Last Updated:

If the insured or insured’s family member is stable at the time a policy is purchased and later contracts the Zika virus prior to departing for a trip, they may be covered to cancel their trip and receive 100% reimbursement for any prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs they insured under the Trip Cancellation benefit.

This typically requires documentation from a treating physician or hospital stating the family member requires the insured’s care, or if the insured is infected, advising against travel due to the disease.

Each policy defines family member differently. Typically, a family member includes children, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and in-laws. Cousins are usually excluded.

This coverage is subject to change at any time.
