What is Generali?

Generali Global Assistance (Formerly CSA Travel Protection) is among the most popular travel insurance providers in the world, as well as on Squaremouth’s marketplace. Founded in 1963, they’re well known for going above and beyond for their customers, providing all policyholders with complimentary concierge services and identity theft protection while they’re away from home.

Generali currently offers three comprehensive policies on Squaremouth, which are only available to U.S. residents. These policies, named Standard, Preferred, and Premium, provide similar types of coverage with varying degrees of coverage limits and price tiers.

The provider has essentially tiered their plans using a “Good, Better, Best” approach to make it easy to find a Generali plan that fits your unique travel needs. If you’re taking a low-risk or quick trip, this tiered policy structure also gives you the option to purchase basic coverage and avoid paying extra for additional protection you may not need.

Is Generali Travel Insurance Any Good?

Yes, Generali is a very reputable travel insurance provider with a 60+ year-long track record of providing coverage to travelers domestically and abroad. Generali Global Assistance is part of the Generali Group, one of the world’s largest insurance companies, with operations in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Their policies currently hold A+ (Superior) ratings from A.M. Best and are backed by more than 5,000 customer reviews from Squaremouth users. Generali also maintains an A rating with the Better Business Bureau, highlighting their dedication to resolving customer issues and complaints.

Our Take: With the financial backing of a multinational corporation and a level of customer service you would expect from a boutique insurer, it’s no surprise that Generali is a global leader in travel insurance. They offer three different plans, each uniquely suited for various audiences and trip types, which makes it easy to find an option suitable for your upcoming trip. Their base plan, Generali Standard, is currently the most popular plan from the provider on our platform as it offers a great value for the money in terms of coverage and price. However, Generali doesn’t offer much customization or coverage for pre-existing conditions, so if these are important to you, consider looking at other providers.

Pros & Cons of Generali Travel Insurance

Pros:
  • All plans offer strong Medical Evacuation coverage, ranging from $250K – $1M
  • Globally recognized insurance brand
  • Complimentary concierge services and identity theft protection
  • Rental Car Damage protection is included at no additional cost with select plans
Cons:
  • All plans offer secondary medical coverage
  • Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered by certain plans
  • Short 10-day Free Look Period
  • No coverage for adventure sports or activities

As one of the largest providers in the world, purchasing a policy from a recognizable insurer like Generali can offer added peace of mind. Larger brands typically have superior global healthcare networks, which can help when it comes to getting access to quality care in a foreign country.

All of Generali’s plans offer at least $250,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage, which is adequate coverage for just about every type of trip. This is important as the cost of medical evacuation services can be astonishingly high, especially if you’re traveling to a destination that doesn’t accept U.S. health insurance.

Generali’s Premium policy is also one of the few policies on the market that comes with complimentary Rental Car Damage protection. This coverage is rarely offered, and is usually only available as an add-on or upgrade. Having this protection at no additional cost can save you money by not having to buy additional protection through your rental car company.

Unfortunately, all of Generali’s plans include secondary medical coverage, which means policyholders must file a claim with their U.S. health insurance provider before being eligible for coverage through Generali. Also, it has limited coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.

In addition, none of the Generali policies cover accidents that occur while participating in adventure sports or activities. This lack of customization can be restrictive, especially if you have specific health issues or travel plans that require tailored coverage.

Generali also has one of the shortest Free Look Periods on our platform at just 10 days, whereas some other providers offer up to 15 days. Plans with longer Free Look Periods give you more time to cancel or modify your policy at no additional cost.

Generali’s Single Trip Travel Insurance Plans

Generali currently offers three comprehensive travel insurance plans on the Squaremouth marketplace. Their plans take a ‘Good, Better, Best’ approach to coverage, with Premium offering the best protection at the highest price.

Compare Generali’s plans below:

Plan Medical Evacuation &
Repatriation
Trip Cancellation Trip Interruption CFAR Option
Standard $50,000 Secondary $250,000 100% of the trip cost 125% of the trip cost
Preferred $150,000 Secondary $500,000 100% of the trip cost 150% of the trip cost
Premium $250,000 Secondary $1,000,000 100% of the trip cost 175% of the trip cost

Generali Standard is the most affordable policy offered by the provider, and is also the most popular among Squaremouth customers. Despite being the lowest-tier option, it still manages to offer suitable medical coverage for most domestic and international trips. However, a big drawback of this plan is that it does not cover pre-existing conditions, which can be an issue if you have an existing health issue that may flare up while you are away.

Generali Preferred is the next step up from Standard and offers slightly better protection across the board. Due to the higher medical coverage limits, Preferred is better suited if you’re planning a cruise or plan to visit remote destinations throughout your trip. Another key advantage of this plan is the additional Trip Interruption coverage, which can help cover transportation expenses if you’re forced to end your trip early.

The Generali plan that provides the most coverage is Generali Premium. This plan features up to $1,000,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage, which is among the highest of any comprehensive plan found on Squaremouth. Generali Premium is the only plan offered by the provider that extends pre-existing condition protection to qualifying travelers, and is also one of only a handful of policies on the market that offer Rental Car Damage protection at no additional cost. Due to the high medical coverage limits, this policy is well-suited for older travelers, those with existing health issues, or travelers planning an international trip to a remote destination.

Terrible service by Generali. They did not pay out for missing our flight due to cruise ship delays. They did not return my calls. Horrible experience. Will never use Generali again.

    Generali Global Assistance policy: Standard

My trip was scheduled to begin on April 28, 2026. Unfortunately, on April 27, 2026, I experienced chest pain and was taken to the Emergency Room. After a thorough evaluation, the ER physician did not identify an immediate life-threatening condition but determined that I might have an underlying heart condition requiring further evaluation by a cardiologist. I was discharged with explicit medical instructions not to travel until I had been examined and medically cleared by a cardiologist. As a result, I had no choice but to cancel my trip.

On May 1, 2026, I promptly filed a trip cancellation claim with Generali and submitted all requested supporting documentation, including:
    - The physician's statement explaining the medical reason for canceling my trip.
    - Emergency Room records and hospital notes.
    - Documentation showing the cancellation of my flights and hotel reservations.
    - Any additional information requested during the claims process.

Despite providing all requested documentation in a timely manner, my claim has been subject to repeated and unnecessary delays. Over the past two and a half months, Generali has repeatedly requested documents that were already submitted, creating an unnecessary and frustrating cycle of duplicate requests rather than conducting a fair and timely review of my claim.

Even more concerning, at one point Generali denied my claim, stating that the documentation was insufficient. This decision was both unreasonable and unsupported, as the medical records clearly document my Emergency Room visit, the physician's assessment, and the medical recommendation that I should not travel until receiving clearance from a cardiologist. These documents directly support the reason for my trip cancellation and satisfy the documentation requirements for a covered medical cancellation.

As a policyholder who fulfilled every obligation under the claims process, I expected my claim to be handled professionally, fairly, and within a reasonable timeframe. Instead, I have experienced prolonged delays, repeated requests for documents already provided, poor communication, and an apparent failure to adequately review the evidence submitted.

I respectfully request that Generali conduct an immediate and thorough review of my claim based on the documentation already provided and issue a prompt determination. If any additional information is genuinely required, I ask that Generali clearly identify the specific documents needed rather than repeatedly requesting materials that have already been submitted.

My experience has been extremely disappointing. Based on the handling of my claim, I cannot recommend Generali to other travelers seeking reliable travel insurance. I hope this complaint will encourage Generali to improve its claims handling process and provide the level of service that policyholders reasonably expect.

    Generali Global Assistance policy: Preferred

It was very difficult to file a claim as I did not have foxfire search engine. I had to photograph many of documents even though they were emails. I called for help and I was told I must get foxfire in order to file a claim. The agent did not give me any alternatives except I could try and file a paper/ mail in claim but would not help me find how to get it. Instead, I was disconnected/ hung-up on. I had to use 2 usernames and passwords to different websites in order to to complete my claim. It was very confusing and very frustrating. I paid over $600 for policy and received a little over $200 for a trip delay to compensate hotel stay which cost over $300. For all the difficulties filing a claim,
I really don’t think trip insurance is worthwhile. I have traveled many times with trip insurance and have mostly been compensated for food bought for a delay. Airlines are responsible for most rescheduling, or lost luggage and group travel programs will reschedule for a future trip if one can’t travel due to pandemics, weather delays. I no longer see the value of trip insurance. It’s a big headache trying to get a few measly dollars back when price of insurance is an additional cost to a trip.

Premiums for Generali’s plans are generally middle of the pack compared to other well-established travel insurance companies. It’s possible to find more affordable coverage by comparing quotes from other providers, but you may sacrifice coverage in the process.

Their medical-only policies currently hold an average premium of $42.10, which is towards the higher end of this type of coverage. This pricing is particularly high given the fact that Generali offers secondary medical coverage on all plans. If protecting your health while away from home is a primary concern, it may be possible to find stronger coverage for less by comparing plans from other providers.

Comprehensive coverage from Generali costs $232.80 on average, which is among the most affordable out of all providers listed on Squaremouth. Generali Standard, their low-cost plan, is the most popular among travelers looking for comprehensive coverage from Generali. Comprehensive plans from this insurer can be a great option if you’re looking for reliable, well-rounded protection that doesn’t break the bank.

Is Generali Travel Insurance Worth it?

Yes, Generali has built a global reputation for providing reliable travel protection, and their affordable comprehensive plans are a great option if you’re seeking well-rounded coverage from a reputable insurer. Generali goes above and beyond to make trips less stressful, which shows through their high customer satisfaction scores and popularity among Squaremouth users.

Generali’s Standard plan is a great option if you’re in the market for a low-cost comprehensive plan that can protect you against the most common travel disruptions. If additional coverage is needed, their Preferred and Premium options offer slightly better protection at a higher price point.

While all Generali’s plans are extremely popular, they do have limitations that should be considered before your travels. Specifically, none of the options offered by Generali offer coverage for adventure sports. This lack of customization can make it hard to tailor your coverage to your specific travel needs. If you can’t find a plan from Generali that works for you, consider policies from other popular providers.

Alternatives to Generali

IMG is known for their dedicated travel medical insurance plans. Patriot International Platinum by IMG includes up to $2,000,000 in Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation coverage.

You can purchase Generali coverage up until the day you leave for your trip. However, we recommend purchasing your policy as soon as you make your initial trip deposit. Doing so prolongs your coverage period and protects you from unforeseeable events that occur before your trip.

To qualify for time-sensitive benefits from Generali, such as Financial Default and Employment Layoff coverage, you must purchase your policy within 14 days of making your first trip payment.

For more information on the benefits of purchasing coverage early, read our recent When is the Best Time to Buy Travel Insurance? article.
