Can I still get travel insurance for my trip to Europe even though there’s a travel alert?

Last Updated:

Short Answer

Travel insurance is still available to travelers planning trips to Europe, even though a travel alert has already been issued. The alert does not affect the coverage for any benefits.

More Detail

Terrorism coverage is still available for Europe despite the travel alert. If a terrorist attack occurs at your destination, you will no longer be able to purchase a new policy with Terrorism coverage for that specific incident, though you can still purchase a policy for its other benefits.

Standard travel insurance does not provide coverage to cancel your trip due to a travel alert. Only a policy with the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade would cover cancellation for this reason. However, utilizing the Cancel For Any Reason option to cancel due to a travel alert, or fear of a potential terrorist attack, would only reimburse you up to 75% of your trip cost.

The Cancel for Any Reason upgrade is only available within 14-30 days of your first trip booking. The upgrade requires you to insure 100% of your trip cost, and you must cancel at least 2-3 days prior to your departure date. Adding Cancel for Any Reason can increase the policy premium by 40%.
