Does the travel delay benefit cover an eruption of the Icelandic volcano?

Last Updated:

Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano erupted on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Any travel insurance policies purchased on or after that date, will not cover any losses related to the volcano, including delayed or cancelled flights.

For travelers who have purchased a policy prior to the eruption, travel delay coverage may be available if the Icelandic volcano delays travel arrangements. This benefit provides reimbursement for meals and accommodations due to a trip’s unexpected delay.

To be eligible for the travel delay benefit, the eruption must fall under one of the policy’s covered reasons within the travel delay benefit. Additionally, travelers must have purchased the policy prior to the volcano’s eruption.
