When can I buy travel insurance to cover a flood?

Last Updated:

You can buy travel insurance with cancellation coverage for floods up until the day before your departure date.

Travel insurance policies are designed to cover unforeseen events. Once an event has become known, it is too late to buy travel insurance coverage.

Most travel insurance policies with the Trip Cancellation benefit have coverage for natural disasters, including floods. This can refund 100% of your prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses if you can’t travel because of a flood. However, it’s important to read and understand each policy’s specific requirements for coverage for flooding.

The following reasons can trigger Trip Cancellation coverage:

  • Your destination is made uninhabitable or inaccessible due to the flooding
  • There is a mandatory evacuation at your destination
