Will my coverage extend if I am unable to leave my destination due to the volcano eruption?

Last Updated:

Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano erupted on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Any travel insurance policies purchased on or after that date, will not cover any losses related to the volcano. Travelers who are unable to leave their destination due to the volcano, must have purchased a policy prior to the eruption in order for their coverage to extend.

If a customer has purchased a policy prior to the eruption, policy coverage may automatically extend if you are unable to return home on your scheduled return date due to the Icelandic volcano. In order to be eligible for this coverage, the event that causes the delay must meet the policy’s requirements within either the trip interruption or travel delay benefit.

Typically a policy may extend 5-7 days, or until you exceed 150% of your trip interruption limits, whichever comes first.
